Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Welcomes New Director of Discipleship and Outreach.
Pleasant Grove Baptist Church is grateful to announce the addition of a Director of
Discipleship and Outreach team member to their ministry staff. Acknowledging the
necessity for this position came from an intentional needs assessment of current church
efforts to better serve its congregation and community. From this assessment, the areas
of focus established were discipleship with small groups and programs of all ages,
connection through efforts in building and maintaining relationships with newly baptized
believers and members, evangelism by executing the church’s mission and outreach
efforts utilizing its vibrant volunteer base, establishing consistent ministries with their
college and young adults and overseeing business operations of the church.
PGBC didn’t have to look far to fill this role as one person was perfectly crafted for this
role – Shawn Tomes. No stranger to the Owensboro – Daviess County community,
Tomes most recently served as the Vice President of Mission and Culture at Kentucky
Wesleyan College. He spent the last eight years at KWC, initially serving as their
Director of Campus Ministries. He previously served as area director of the Northwest
Kentucky Fellowship of Christian Athletes and has been an art teacher, guidance
counselor and basketball coach.
Shawn explains what led him to Pleasant Grove. "I have been humbled by every opportunity God has given me to serve others over the last 30 years. God works in mysterious ways and God’s timing has always been perfect. I am excited about this season of life and the opportunity to serve the ministry and people of Pleasant Grove." He continues, "I am humbled to come alongside a great ministry team and church family. I am praying for and expecting God to continue to move in powerful ways."
Shawn’s love for the Lord and for people is obvious to anyone who has met him, and
this new role will allow him to thrive in serving all those he comes alongside. The
ministries at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church will benefit greatly as he steps in to help
further the mission of the church.
David Rodgers, Worship Pastor at PGBC shares his excitement for the addition, “It’s our
desire to develop followers of Jesus that grow to make an impact on those around
them. That purpose is embodied in Shawn Tomes and I couldn’t be more thrilled to
serve with him!” He continues, “His genuine heart, servant leadership, and love for
others is evident in all aspects of his life. We’re grateful that God orchestrated this
opportunity for Shawn to join our ministry team. I have no doubt that the message of
Jesus will be furthered through Shawn’s natural gift of coaching and nurturing the
church while loving and serving this community.”
Tomes has been a friend of Pleasant Grove for many years, by being a guest preacher
and leading student events such as Discipleship Now. He assumes this new role
immediately, in a bi-vocational status.
Pleasant Grove Baptist Church is a Southern Baptist church that’s made up of a multi-
generational, energetic, and growing congregation with a current weekly worship
attendance of approximately 650.
The PGBC mission is to impact this ever-changing culture with the never-changing love
and message of Jesus Christ.
